July 6-8 in New Orleans means Essence Fest, when over 40 names in music will descend upon the Superdome to celebrate women of color, empowerment and a general joie de vivre. Essence Fest 2018 released today (January 25) the first leg of its talent announcement rollout, which includes Janet Jackson, (recently Oscar-nominated!) Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Snoop Dogg, The Roots and many more.
Other performers include Fantasia, Miguel, Kelly Price and Marsha Ambrosius. As if they weren’t enough, Xscape, 112, Teddy Riley, Blackstreet, Guy and Wreckx-n-Effect will bring the ’90s R&B and New Jack Swing vibes. As usual, Essence Fest will also celebrate emergent voices including H.E.R., Daniel Ceasar, Kelela and DVSN. Mykia Jovan will represent New Orleans on the lineup.
The three-day affair will also feature some new additions in the form of the Essence “Superlounge,” starring MC Lyte, Idris Elba and other stars offering up DJ-curated experiences. Plus, there will be an “interactive music experience” with The Read’s Kid Fury and Crissle.
