This June, jazz musician and performer Esquizito will perform at the 2023 Hollywood Fringe Festival in Los Angeles, California in a performance depicting the era of New Orleans’ legal red-light district, a.k.a. Storyville.
The Hollywood Fringe Festival, is, “an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community,” and will take place from June 8 to 25.
In his performance, which is based on the late renowned jazz musician Danny Barker’s book Buddy Bolden and the Last Days of Storyville, Esquizito has conjured up some of the notorious characters of The District by interpreting Barker’s “lies embellished with truth,” depicting New Orleans’ red light district and the birth of jazz.
Esquizito’s theatrical adaptation of Barker’s book has been performed in New Orleans, as covered by OffBeat Magazine in 2022. The Hollywood Fringe Festival performances will take place on Sunday, June 4 at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 10 at midnight and Friday, June 23 at 8 p.m. in the Black Box at the Broadwater Theatre on 6322 Santa Monica Blvd.
The Sunday show will be a pay-what-you-can preview, and tickets for the Saturday and Friday shows are $15. Fringe Buttons, which provide $1 off all ticket purchases sold through the Fringe, are valid for these performances.
