ESPN host to sign new book at Baldwin & Co.

Baldwin & Co. Coffee + Bookstore will host a community book signing for sports media icon Stephen A. Smith, on Saturday, January 21, at 4:00 p.m. He will discuss his life, career and reveal who he really is when not on TV. Hardcover copies of Smith’s book Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes. Tickets are available online.

Smith is the highest-paid personality on ESPN and is the son of Caribbean immigrants and the youngest of six children. As a basketball player at Winston-Salem State University under Hall of Fame coach Clarence Gaines, he started his sports media “career” when he wrote a column for the university newspaper arguing that his own coach should retire due to health issues.

Smith rose up as a sports columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer in the ’90s, before beginning his affiliation with ESPN in the mid-2000s. A rollercoaster of events followed between Smith and the network. He’d receive his own show, be fired and rehired between 2005 and 2011.

In Straight Shooter, Smith explains exactly how he climbed to the top of the ESPN media empire while touching on his childhood, family and fatherhood. From his own experience, he writes about knowing your value, spotting opportunities, building relationships, owning your brand, and promoting what you do best.
