May 5 marks Cinco de Mayo, a widely misinterpreted historical celebration marking the defeat of Napoleon II’s French forces against the Mexican army in 1862. A 2008 survey by NationalToday.com indicated only 10-percent of Americans knew the origins of a holiday that has become a boon for Mexican restaurants in the United States. A rainy forecast has altered many of today’s fiestas, but you can get your fill of tacos, margaritas, and live Latin music at the following locations. (We recommend calling in advance to confirm activities.)
Republic NOLA will offer $5 margaritas and $5 tequila shots from 5 to 11 p.m. with music by DJ Keith Scott and DJ RBD.
Zócalo Cocina Mexicana & Cantina will host Zócalo Fest, a Cinco de Mayo fiesta, featuring food from Zócalo, Brasa Churrasqueria, Baru Bistro & Tapas and Basin Seafood and Spirits. The festival will feature food with an emphasis on Latin culture and cuisine, with Mexican beers and a tequila tasting, $2 tacos and margarita specials ($10 medium). DJ Javi Reyes will provide music all day, starting at 11:30 a.m., and there will be live music performances by Fermín & Su Banda from 4 p.m. until closing.
Originally scheduled for Casa Borrega, due to weather concerns Rock ‘n’ Bowl will host the New Orleans Mambo Kings from 7 to 10 p.m. All previously sold tickets through eventbrite will be honored.
Vybes Nation will host its seventh annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, with Latin-inspired cuisine, drink specials, vendors and DJs mixing music throughout the day. Tickets start at $10.
Live music will be underway at all three locations of Felipe’s Taqueria in metro New Orleans, with a streaming option on Facebook Live starting at 5 p.m.
On Frenchmen Street, Bamboula’s will present Brazil Quartet from 3 to 6 p.m. followed by Vivaz until closing time.
The Iguanas will take the stage at the Broadside at 7 p.m.
A Cinco de Mayo Housefest will take over the Al Copeland Meadow Concert Stage at LaFraniere Park in Metairie from 3 to 10 p.m., featuring Bag of Donuts, DJ Andrea Ferratti, LeTrainiump, DJ Rajs, DJ Michael Medina and DJ 2nyce.
