As desperate times call for desperate measures, the Native American United Houma Nation will be performing a healing ceremony for the Gulf of Mexico workers April 8-10. To help, Dr. John—a long-time environmental advocate who has become even more vocal in his outrage over damage to the Gulf and its wetlands since the BP oil spill—hosted a benefit concert at the Howlin Wolf this past Sunday, February 27. Proceeds from the show are going to the non-profit group Turtle Women Rising, who will help send Native American healers and elders to attend and participate in the Houma Nation’s ceremony in April.
The Doctor (this month’s cover subject) performed with his Mystickel Majickel Mystery Band, an all-star outfit that included the Bonerama horn section, Alonzo Bowens on sax, David Barard plucking the bass, John Fohl and Billy Iuso picking guitars, Herlin Riley keeping time on the drums, and members of the Pussyfooters shakin it as backup dancers. Billy Iuso and the Restless Natives opened for Dr. John with Thomas McDonald on bass, Bryan Besse on drums, CR Gruver on keyboards, and Iuso on guitar.
