Details surrounding a public funeral for Malcolm/Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack have been announced. The late icon and New Orleans music giant died at 77 earlier this month. Dr. John’s public services will take place Saturday, June 22 at the Orpheum Theater.
News of the public services was first spotted on the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s social media. According to a Facebook post, the Orpheum will host a public visitation from 7 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. This will be followed by a private memorial broadcast live by WWOZ, from 1 to 3 p.m. This is invitation only. At 3 p.m., a public second line will kick off from the Orpheum.
On June 7, New Orleans had an early memorial for Dr. John in the form of a second line. Check out photos from that beautiful sendoff here.
