The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation has announced details for the 2020 Class Got Brass competition, an annual event supporting the arts and education.
Class Got Brass invites high-school and middle-school students in Louisiana to form a New Orleans-style brass band with up to 12 members. The competition itself is in the form of a second line parade, in which the competing bands perform for a panel of judges. Up to $45,000 is up for grabs, dispersed between bands at the beginner and advanced level. “There’s something for everyone, though,” says the Foundation. “Competitors who meet all eligibility requirements but don’t place in either category will receive a stipend of up to $1,000 as a reward for their participation.”
Of particular note for this year’s Class Got Brass is its new location and date. In years past, the competition took place during the Congo Square Rhythms Festival, but due to the Festival’s move to the month of November, the competition will now take place on Sunday, March 22, 2020. The site of the competition is Henriette Delille Street in the Tremé (in front of Backstreet Cultural Museum).
Another note: applications are now open but are due no later than March 13. For more information, and to access the application, click here.
