It’s the Purple One’s birthday on Friday, June 7, which means it’s time for DJ Soul Sister’s annual Purple Takeover: A Prince Celebration.
Now in its fourth year, the event not only celebrates the life and work of Prince, but also serves as a benefit Electric Girls, a local 501(c)3 non-profit organization that builds girls’ confidence and capabilities by engaging them through STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Soul Sister says she chose the organization as this year’s beneficiary “because of Prince’s engaged support of charities and organizations dedicated to STEM as well as green technology education. Not to mention his role in supporting women. Just one example is sound engineer Susan Rogers, who was Prince’s right hand for 1983-1988, engineering his most famous albums.”
This year’s #PrinceDay party takes place June 7 at One Eyed Jacks (615 Toulouse St.) from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. There’s also a V.I.P. (“Very Into Prince”) ticket option for $75. DJ Soul Sister will be joined by DJ Lenka Paris of Minneapolis, Prince’s hometown.
If that’s not enough Prince excitement for you, Soul Sister will host a Prince-themed happy hour event on June 6 at the Catahoula Hotel.
