One of New Orleans’s favorite musical figures, DJ Soul Sister, is throwing her 12th annual Birthday Jam at Tipitina’s on September 7, 2018. Last year, DJ Soul Sister opened the show and then passed the stage to DJ Jazzy Jeff, best known for his Grammy-winning collaboration with Will Smith as DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. This year, DJ Soul Sister presents “Funk Fest 2018” in honor of the funk music festivals from her childhood in New Orleans. After the worldwide “queen of rare groove” and host of WWOZ’s “Soul Power” opens the show, DJ Soul Sister will pass the stage to legendary funk group, Zapp.
Zapp debuted in 1980 with the single “More Bounce to the Ounce” and has inspired Bruno Mars and other funk musicians ever since. The family group of Roger, Lester, Larry and Tony Troutman grew up in Hamilton, Ohio and was influenced by the Ohio Players and Parliament. Lead singer and guitarist, Roger Troutman, has played and produced music with many famous artists (his talkbox is most famously heard on Dr. Dre and 2Pac’s 1996 single “California Love”). Roger and Larry died in 1999, but the other Troutman brothers honor their legacies by continuing to groove.
“Whether you know all [of Zapp’s] hits or none at all, you already know for my birthday jam you’ll have a ball. Calling all right on partiers and my fellow Virgos too, this Funk is just for YOU!” DJ Soul Sister said on Instagram on July 13.
Of course, no birthday would be complete without cake, while supplies last.
Doors open at 9 p.m. for a 10 p.m. show on September 7 at Tipitina’s. The event is for ages 18+. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased here.
