At 10 p.m. on Friday June 8, Prince lovers and casual fans alike can join DJ Soul Sister for her annual celebratory tribute to the late funk icon at Civic Theatre. Purple Takeover: A Prince Celebration is among the many festivities occurring around the world this week for #PrinceDay (Prince’s birthday), as he would have turned 60 this year.
This Friday marks the third year that DJ Soul Sister has hosted a memorial performance in New Orleans celebrating Prince’s life and work. However, these performances are not just gatherings for Prince’s rabid and extensive fanbase; they also honor the humble philanthropist who used his fortune to assist marginalized communities and underserved youth.
“I started the event the year Prince passed away, inspired by all the stories of Prince’s secret charitable works which all came out that year,” DJ Soul Sister said. “I decided that I wanted to do an annual benefit in his honor and to do good in our community.”
Every year since the event’s inception, the charitable beneficiary has been 826 New Orleans (formerly known as Big Class), and this year will be no different. 826 New Orleans is a nonprofit organization that offers volunteer-supported writing programs to New Orleans youth and schools free of charge.
In addition to a set from DJ Soul Sister, the four-hour celebration will feature performances from Prince’s own DJ, Lenka Paris, along with The DSMR Dancers and the Conga Queen of New Orleans. Attendees can also expect appearances from Prince projections, and they can indulge in the Glam Slam Photo Booth and drink specials that will be available throughout the night.
General admission tickets are 18+ and are available for $20 advance and $25 at the door. “LoveSexy” VIP admission tickets are 21+ and are available for $50 advance and $55 at the door.
