DJ Soul Sister’s long-running Hustle party will take over Hi-Ho Lounge for the last time this Saturday, May 27. The late night party will celebrate its 13th anniversary—as well as its final weekly edition—with some help from Cash Money icon Mannie Fresh.
Nevertheless, Hustle will live on as a less frequent occurrence. According to a post on her Facebook page, DJ Soul Sister is “returning the party to how it started…as a party that I threw on random occasions when I felt like it.” The next edition will take place from 11pm to 3am at the Ice Pit (a.k.a the Orpheum Theater’s basement) on Saturday, June 24.
Hustle started 13 years ago at Leo’s in the Bywater before turning into a weekly gathering at Mimi’s in the Marigny’s upstairs. For the past five years, the event has been hosted bi Hi-Ho Lounge on St. Claude Avenue.
In addition to announcing the reimagining of Hustle, DJ Soul Sister has also revealed the details for a pair of Prince tributes she will be putting on next month. Her 2nd annual “Revolution: a Prince Celebration” show will take place at One Eyed Jacks on Friday, June 2. That gig will find her teaming up with the DMSR Dancers and the Conga Queen of New Orleans while spinning Prince and Prince-related jams from 10pm-2am.
Soul Sister will also host a Prince Day party at the Catahoula Hotel, which is slated for Wednesday, June 7 at the establishment’s rooftop bar. That one will feature a Prince-themed happy hour, a Prince trivia competition and a screening of Purple Rain. Helen Gillet—a.k.a. DJ Cheller—will DJ at the event.
