On June 7, three New Orleans DJs–Xivix, Quick Weave and DJ Asics (known collectively as Function Crew)–will throw a rave to kick off Pride Month in New Orleans. The party, dubbed Gassed by Function Crew, will focus on early ’90s dance-scene aesthetics, with the only light sources at the party being lasers and flashing strobes. The music performances will include a steady, heart-pounding mixture of acid house, techno, and electro.
Function Crew gained a good deal of recognition from last year’s Acid Dungeon party, which showcased a unique appearance, combining the styles of rave and sex dungeon at Southern Decadence festival.
The event marks the return of musician Blew Velvet to New Orleans. The city has acted as a source of inspiration for Blew Velvet’s new project, an EP titled Frankie. Earlier this year Blew Velvet released the single “A Sacrifice,” an experimental pop ballad from the upcoming EP; the Function Crew event marks the first live performance of Blew Velvet’s new material.
Also performing at Gassed is Oblivia, the New Orleans queen and noise musician, returning to the city after releasing a noise opera–the short film titled The Bottom–and a second album Suburban Legend earlier this year. Oblivia made The Bottom to explore the concept of emotional lows, a place they think is universal but can often act as the stimulus for creativity. In an interview with the magazine Antigravity, Oblivia said The Bottom acts as a bridge between the first album, Martyr Complex, and the new album, Suburban Legend.
The event will be hosted by Miss Hot Girl Bijoux from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m at Poor Boys Bar, located at 1328 Saint Bernard Ave.
