Grammy-nominated artist Divinity Roxx is set to release her latest project, “World Wide Playdate,” on August 9, 2024. This hip-hop family album is a vibrant celebration of play, joy, and connection, designed for children twelve and under, as well as the young at heart. Following the success of her Grammy-nominated debut family album, Ready Set Go!, Divinity returns with ten original tracks that blend 90’s hip-hop influences with positive, uplifting messages.
The album features an impressive lineup of guest artists, including Tarriona “Tank” Ball from Tank and the Bangas, Mumu Fresh, Grammy-winning bass virtuoso Victor Wooten, actor and poet Malcolm Jamal Warner, and Nigerian-born artist Teemanay. The Genesis Innovation Academy Cheer Team from Atlanta adds energy to the backing vocals, and Divinity’s niece and goddaughter also make special appearances, bringing a personal touch to the project.
Roxx is a Grammy-nominated recording artist, composer, and musician with four solo albums to her name. She gained prominence as the bassist and musical director for Beyoncé from 2006 to 2011. She has appeared on numerous television shows, including Saturday Night Live and Good Morning America, and performed at the White House Easter Egg Roll in 2023. In addition to her music career, Divinity composes for television and theatre and recently premiered her solo stage play, Starchild, at Crossroads Theatre in 2023. Her latest work includes the theme song for the PBS Kids show “Lyla in the Loop.”
Inspired by the music of her youth, “World Wide Playdate” offers catchy hooks, playful lyrics, and beats that are sure to get listeners moving. The album emphasizes the importance of play as a tool for emotional and cognitive development, aligning with research from the National Institute for Play that highlights play’s role in reducing stress and anxiety. Themes of friendship, family, self-empowerment, and dream-chasing are woven throughout the album, making it a perfect soundtrack for finding joy and connection in everyday life.
Divinity teamed up with producer Wayne Gerard, known for his work with Don Was and Dr. Fink, and hit songwriter Mary Brown, who has penned songs for Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, and Michael Jackson. Together, they crafted a collection of songs that are as fun as they are meaningful.
The album kicks off with “Celebrate!,” a high-energy anthem that encourages listeners to recognize and appreciate their achievements. The title track, “World Wide Playdate,” is a dance-ready tune that embodies the spirit of play and connection, while “Happy Place,” featuring Tarriona “Tank” Ball, invites listeners to find solace and joy in their personal sanctuaries. Other standout tracks include “LOL Laugh Out Loud,” a giggle-filled song that spreads happiness, and “Make a Friend,” which celebrates the joys of meeting new people and expanding one’s horizons.
“Girl Dad,” a heartfelt tribute to Divinity’s late father, underscores the importance of persistence and hard work, while “Imma Force,” featuring Mumu Fresh, bursts with self-confidence and encourages kids to explore their potential. “Bring It To Life” offers motivation for turning dreams into reality, and “Raise Me Up,” featuring Victor Wooten and Malcolm Jamal Warner, honors the mentors and loved ones who help us become our best selves. The album closes with “Shake It Down,” a lively track that teaches a new dance and wraps up the party on a high note.
