If you’ve spent any time at all in South Louisiana, chances are you’ve tried at least one of the regions’ various takes on gumbo. You may have noticed that roux was a prominent ingredient in the classic dish. You may have also noticed that trendy health foods like kale and quinoa were not.
Those are a few of the reasons why countless Louisianans are not happy with Disney’s new recipe for the “best gumbo in the bayou.” The cooking demonstration was posted in a video on the Facebook page for The Princess and the Frog, a 2009 Disney animated film that was set in 1920s New Orleans.
Now, it is conceivable that a “healthy gumbo” could possibly feature things like kale or quinoa. But no roux? That’s just blasphemy.
UPDATE: Disney has taken down their video following widespread outrage from Louisiana natives, which included a White House petition to Stop Disney From Ruining Gumbo. You can watch a (very much edited) version of the video below.
