Deutsches Haus welcomes spring with Volksfest

Volksfest or Maifest is a traditional German celebration of spring and outdoor activities after a long winter. The Deutsches Haus, located along Bayou St. John at 1700 Moss Street, will celebrate on Friday, April 30, from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Admission is $5 for non-members and free for kids under 12 years. Deutsches Haus members may attend for free plus one guest.

The number of people on site will be limited and socially distanced according to local and state regulations. Some parking available on site. Bring your portable festival chairs to sit under the beautiful oaks on the Haus property.

Scheduled activities include:

Friday, April 30

  • 4 p.m. – Doors open
  • 5 p.m. – Maypole ceremony
  • On the stage during the evening – Bier Musikanten band, Schnitzelbank Lasse, and Children’s Mass Krug contest
  • 10 p.m. – Closing

Saturday, May 1

  • 11 a.m. – Doors open
  • 12 p.m. – Opening ceremony including Keg Tapping
  • 12:30 p.m. – Maypole Ceremony
  • 1 p.m. – Volkslauf (A traditional German group walk – led by the Chicken!)
  • 1:30 p.m. – Hund Parade with dog costumes
  • On the stage during the day and evening – Bier Musikanten band, Schnitzelbank Lasse, and Adult and Childrens Mass Krug contests
  • 3 p.m. – Maypole Ceremony
  • 5 p.m. – Maypole Ceremony
  • 10 p.m. – Volksfest ends

The food menu will include:

  • Frikadellen Plate (German-style hamburger patty with Mashed Potatoes, German Baked Beans, and Cabbage Salad)
  • 2-Wurst Plate (with Mashed Potatoes, Red Cabbage, and Sauerkraut)
  • Flammkuchen (German-style pizza with creamy white sauce)
  • Bratwurst on Pretzel Bun
  • Soft, fresh-baked Pretzels
  • Popcorn
  • Many varieties of German beer and wine
  • Soft-drinks and water

On May 1, schnapps and wine classes will be offered, each limited to 20 people, socially distanced. The topic for each session will be either schnapps or German and Austrian wines. Each tasting will last 45 minutes to an hour.

  • Schnapps tasting – $15 per person
