On Thursday, June 7, d.b.a. will host the official release party for a new album from two of the city’s most decorated musicians, Derrick Freeman and James Martin (plus, a bevy of their talented friends and bandmates).
The recording for Derrick Freeman and James Martin Present: Soul began back in 2015 and was originally supposed to be a project released under the MFG (Martin, Freeman, Genius) Trio name but morphed into something else entirely. “As we got in the studio, more musicians started showing up and after a few more sessions where we involved Soul Brass Band, we came up with this album that we have here,” Martin tells OffBeat.com. In 2016, Martin released a solo album, Something’s Gotta Give.
Soul features contributions from Danny Abel, Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown, Arséne Delay, Sam Dickey, Steven Glenn, Nigel Hall, Mark Hempe, Raja Kassis, Luke Quaranta, Khris Royal, Ian Smith, Michael Watson and many more. Below, check out Freeman and Martin performing a Fats Domino classic with other members of Soul Brass Band:
This evening (May 17), Freeman will be celebrating his birthday at d.b.a. and will have copies of Soul available. The June 7 Soul release party will begin at 10 p.m., with a $5 cover at the door.
