Artists and fans across the music world have been mourning songwriter, producer and performer Allen Toussaint, who passed away following a concert in Madrid on Monday night.
While many of these artists have paid tribute to the late New Orleans legend with heartfelt posts on social media, some of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead honored Toussaint’s memory through their music. Last night, Dead & Company–a new Grateful Dead spin off that includes Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart and John Mayer–celebrated Toussaint’s life with a cover of his 1966 Lee Dorsey tune “Get Out Of My Life Woman” during their show at the DCU Center in Worscester, MA.
The Toussaint classic was never a part of the Grateful Dead’s repertoire, but it was frequently covered by the late Jerry Garcia’s solo band. Toussaint, who proclaimed himself a Deadhead during his set at this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, returned the favor earlier this year when he performed the tune with members of the Grateful Dead during a star-studded tribute to Garcia.
Here’s a recording of Toussaint’s rendition of the song from this year’s Dear Jerry concert, which took pace at Maryland’s Merriweather Post Pavilion on May 14, 2015:
