David Freedman, the former General Manager of WWOZ, New Orleans’ beloved community radio station, passed away in June 2024, leaving behind a legacy of passion and innovation that transformed WWOZ into a global beacon of New Orleans culture. A Celebration of Life honoring Freedman will take place on Wednesday, November 20th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, located at 1225 N Rampart Street.
The Celebration of Life will include an evening of music, remembrance, and New Orleans traditions, reflecting Freedman’s profound love for the city and its culture:
- 4:15 p.m. – A spirited second line with the Panorama Jazz Band
- 5:00 p.m. – Musical performances by acclaimed artists Tom McDermott and Tim Laughlin
- 6:00 p.m. – Open Mic: Remembrances and stories honoring David Freedman
- 7:15 p.m. – A Black Masking Indians Ceremony
Attendees will also enjoy culinary delights featuring Kermit’s BBQ & Red Beans and Dom’s Shrimp Étouffée.
