Dave Jordan & The NIA, short for Neighborhood Improvement Association, are releasing the album Burning Sage on Oct. 1 digitally, and physical copies will follow after Oct. 5. The album marks Jordan’s fourth project since he began to work independently of the New Orleans funk band Juice.
Previously, during live performances, the band had been alternating between folkier renditions of NIA songs and raucous rock-inspired tunes. Now, along with co-producer Jeff Watkins of the New Olreans Suspects, it seems Jordan is embracing this eclecticism in his upcoming album. Burning Sage features myriad styles that range from funk rock and folk music to ballads and a Neil Young cover (a reworking of the classic “Out on the Weekend”). Though Burning Sage is a solo album, Jordan includes a song he wrote for Juice, blending the two projects that defined the past two decades of his life.
To capture this album’s diverse sound, Jordan worked with several younger New Orleans musicians, including drummer David Shirley, keyboardist Ben Alleman, guitarist Alex Mallet and vocalist Mikayla Braun. Five tracks feature horns, arranged by Watkins and performed by Watkins, Sage Rouge, Ian Smith and Jason Parfait.
The release of Burning Sage will coincide with an album release show at Maple Leaf Bar, at 8316 Oak St., on Oct. 5 at 11 p.m. Tickets for the show are $10 and are available at the door.
