Organizers of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell have announced the dates for next year’s event. Jazz Fest 2020 will take place April 23 – 26 and April 30 – May 3, two consecutive weekends providing eight days of music, culture, food and more.
The announcement was made in conjunction with a recap of this year’s festival, which marked the 50th edition of the famed New Orleans celebration. According to a press release, some 475,000 festival goers made Jazz Fest 2019 one of the biggest in history. This year’s event marked the first edition to feature eight days.
Musical highlights included a Marsalis family reunion performance, with patriarch Ellis hitting the stage with sons Wynton, Bradford, Delfeayo and Jason. Katy Perry wowed crowds with a headlining set featuring New Orleans acts The Soul Rebels and the Gospel Soul Children. Elsewhere, the Dave Matthews Band jammed with the Preservation Hal Jazz Band, and Diana Ross made her Jazz Fest debut. Louisiana icons like Louis Armstrong, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew, Allen Toussaint, Louis Prima, Clifton Chenier and more were celebrated with musical tributes. The Neville family closed out Jazz Fest with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, and Smithsonian Folkways toasted a half century of the fest with a special boxed CD set.
