At 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, New Orleans rockers Darcy Malone & The Tangle will perform at the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street to celebrate the birthday of the band’s frontwoman and ringleader, Darcy Malone, as well as the physical release of their new EP, Pure as Gold.
“This is going to be a crazy fun celebration at one of our favorite venues celebrating me having another year around the sun!” Malone said. “It’s going to be one helluva fun night.”
For the band, Pure as Gold is the next step in a musical progression that began with their debut full-length Still Life in 2016. The five-track EP follows up the band’s 2017 project Make Me Over, which was recorded in Washington Parish’s famed Studio in the Country with producer Ben Mumphrey of Pixies, Anders Osborne and The Breeders fame (among others).
Malone says the new record taps into the soulful roots that made the band’s take on traditional rock ‘n’ roll music unique. She highlights tracks like “Meringue,” which she co-wrote with her father Dave Malone, as evidence of this heartfelt return to form.
Darcy’s Birthday Bash is slated to be a night full of music and festivities with the band set to take the stage at 10 p.m. and copies of their new record on sale. Malone says attendees can also expect some surprise appearances from some of the band’s musical friends. “There will be many killer musicians in the house to celebrate my Birthday so you can definitely expect a special guest or two,” Malone said. “You don’t want to miss it!”
The event is 21+ and tickets will be available at the door for $10. The band is also slated to perform in the city next month at Tipitina’s, the New Orleans Oyster Festival, Jazz In the Park and the Creole Tomato Festival.
