The Danny Barker Banjo & Guitar Festival will take over venues across New Orleans from Thursday, January 12 through Sunday, January 15.
Founded by Detroit Brooks (winner of the 2016 Positive Vibrations HeartBeat Award), the festival works to preserve New Orleans banjoist and guitarist Danny Barker’s legacy with a series of workshops, clinics and performances.
The festival will kick off on Thursday with a pair of Danny’s Birthday Bash shows at Snug Harbor, featuring appearances by Brooks, Gregg Stafford, Kerry Lewis, Herman La Beaux, Mari Watanabe, Bruce Brackman, Freddy Lonzo and Topsy Chapman. Those sets will follow a day’s worth of education events at the Little Gem Saloon and US Mint.
A grand finale concert will close out the festivities at the Howlin’ Wolf on Sunday, January 15. Steve Masakowski, John Boutte, Kenny Neal, Solid Harmony, Charmaine Neville and Maria Muldaur will join a house band that includes Raymond Weber, Donald Ramsey and Thaddeus Richard for that concert.
Of course, those are just a couple of the gatherings that will take place over the course of the Danny Barker Banjo & Guitar Festival. The annual celebration will host a variety of other events on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including a panel discussions, clinics, concerts and much more.
