The rhythmic heartbeat of Creole culture comes alive at the George & Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center on Friday, March 29, from 7 – 10 p.m. In a celebration of unity and musical diversity, the Dance Forever! conference invites all to listen, learn, and dance to the vibrant rhythms of the Caribbean, Africa, Central & South America.
Led by drum legend and New Orleans-native Herlin Riley, the ensemble includes percussionist Alexey Marti from Cuba, pianist Victor Campbell also from Cuba, and vocalist/guitarist Yusa, adding a Cuban flair to the mix. Joining them on stage are French percussionist Sonny Troupé from Guadeloupe and bassist Julian Babou from La Réunion, both making their debut in New Orleans with support from Villa Albertine, the artist-in-residence program of the Cultural services of the French Embassy in the United States.
The event aims to explore the rich cultural tapestry of African descendants across various regions, including North America, The Caribbean, Central and South America, and Africa. Through centuries of history, these communities have developed unique identities and practices rooted in African cultural retentions and the process of creolization.
Attendees will not only enjoy a mesmerizing musical journey but also have the opportunity to engage with the artists, deepening their understanding of Creole culture and its significance. This crossroads of traditions promises to be an enlightening and enriching experience for all.
This event is organized by the Tekrema Center for Art & Culture, in collaboration with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, Villa Albertine, the Consulate General of France in Louisiana, Threadhead and the Alliance Française de La Nouvelle-Orléans.
