d.b.a. and The Coven to host Women & Witches in Popular Music

The Coven, an all-women-or-queer assembly of musicians in New Orleans, will present a live show of music written by and about “witches” and witchery at d.b.a. on Friday, April 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. The show is made possible by the Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Community Partnership Grant for Performance, which was awarded to The Coven in December 2022.

The show, titled “The Coven Presents Women & Witches in Popular Music,” celebrates marginalized women and queer folk who have been hiding in plain sight in popular music for decades out of necessity. It showcases the power of these individuals, who have always been some of the most significant writers and performers of rock, jazz and pop songs that even self-professed “conservatives” love most.

The evening will feature music by some of the most prominent names in popular music, including Dr. John, Stevie Nicks, KoKo Taylor, Jefferson Airplane, Erykah Badu, David Bowie, Tami Lynn, Joan Osborne, No Doubt and more. The show will close with a venue-wide group blessing led by the entire Coven.

The vocalists and band members for the show include Debbie Davis, Arsène DeLay, Kimberly Kaye, Meschiya Lake, Mia Borders, Sophie Lee, Alex McMurray, Michael Cerveris, Josh Paxton, Eric Bolivar and Rurik Nunan.

At a time when religious extremism, misogyny, and pearl-clutching about “satanism!” is back in full force, “The Coven Presents Women & Witches in Popular Music” is a timely reminder of the power of marginalized women, queer folk, and spiritual oddballs in popular music.

Tickets for the show are available now.
