The Ella Project, known for its music industry educational webinars, has announced Crescendo, a seven-week series of music business workshops to empower musicians to enhance their music industry skills. Presented by musician Lou Hill and attorney Bri Whetstone, this free workshop series offers insights and knowledge for artists at all career stages.
“Crescendo” will begin on Tuesday, September 26, and run consecutively on Tuesdays, with a brief hiatus on October 31, concluding on November 7. All sessions will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the New Orleans Jazz Museum’s third floor performance space. The workshop series covers essential topics such as music copyright, contracts, publishing, royalties, booking festival gigs, accounting and publicity. Each session is designed to build upon the knowledge gained from the previous one. Artists can choose individual sessions or attend the entire series based on their preferences and needs.
The topics covered in the individual sessions will proceed as follows:
- September 26: Intellectual Property for Musicians
- October 3: Publishing and Revenue Streams
- October 10: Working with Labels, Master Recordings and Record Deals
- October 17: Streaming Royalties and Performing Rights Organizations
- October 24: Music Contracts, Band Agreements and Trademarks
- November 1: Festivals and Finance
- November 7: Releasing, Pitching and Monetizing Your Music
The first host, Lou Hill, is a musician with over two decades of experience in the music industry. Lou Hill founded the Billboard Top 20 charting band Water Seed and was the head of marketing for Louisiana Red Hot Records. He actively supports the growth of New Orleans’ music scene.
Joining Lou is Bri Whetstone, an attorney at the New Orleans firm of McCranie Sistrunk Anzelmo Hardy McDaniel & Welch. Whetstone specializes in intellectual property law. Her prior experience at LucasArts in San Francisco includes managing copyright applications, contracts, international trademarks and social media policies. She has been a volunteer for The Ella Project since 2017.
