The 31st annual French Market Creole Tomato Festival will take over parts of the French Quarter on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11.
Little Freddie King, Robin Barnes, Lynn Drury, Shotgun Jazz Band, Smoky Greenwell are among the artists that will perform on the event’s two stage. Yet as important as music is to any New Orleans celebration, it won’t be the main attraction here.
Naturally, that designation goes to all things tomato-related instead.
Thousands of pounds of creole tomatoes from Ben & Ben Becnel’s Farm and George’s Produce will be on sale at the festival. George’s will also be making their “Best of the Fest”-winning dish: sliced Creole tomatoes topped with Louisiana lump crab and remoulade.
Other vendors will be selling dishes too, including Bite Outside, Cafe Dauphine, Crepes a La Cart, Diva Dawg, George’s Produce Co., Gulf Tacos, LaDelyo’s Creole Catering, Loretta’s Authentic Pralines, Marche, Miss Linda Catering, Pierre Maspero’s, Tujague’s and Voleo’s Seafood Restaurant. Awards will be given out in four categories:Tastiest, Healthiest, Most Creative and Most Traditional.
As usual, alcohol will get the tomato treatment too at the festival’s Bloody Mary Market, which will be located in Dutch Alley. Bloody mary awards will be given out for Best Garnish, Most Creative, Best Mix and Best Overall. Both the food and bloody mary awards will be announced at 1:30pm on Saturday.
Attendees will be able to learn how to whip up some creole tomato dishes of their own at the festival Louisiana Cookin’ Culinary Stage. Located in the Farmers Market, the stage will host cooking demonstrations throughout Saturday and Sunday. A pair of creole tomato eating contests—one for kids and one for adults—will take place at the stage as well.
Additional activities include a two mile run/walk, jazz yoga and kids craft booths. More information can be found via the festival’s website and the full music schedule can be found here.
