Jerry Lenaz’s favorite dance is the stomp-around.
“You turn half way, shake your butt, and end with a fist pump,” the 610 Stomper explains. Lenaz, who is the co-chair for the 610 Stompers’ Ball Crawl, looks forward to the summertime debut of the Stompers’ next move, which they’re keeping under wraps for now. His nickname is Mr. Perfection, “because I like to get the moves just right.”
The 610 Stompers’ Ball Crawl is this Saturday, June 10. For a $35 registration fee, anyone can sign up to parade and party with the Stompers. The all-male, all-moustached dance organization parades during Mardi Gras, but also shook their powder-blue shorts on The Today Show and has been invited to next year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Their signature attire is powder blue softball shorts, knee socks, and red Members Only jackets, but they’ll debut their summer look at the Ball Crawl, replacing the jacket with a jersey that will breathe better as they dance through Mid-City.
Registration is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mid-City Yacht Club, 440 S. St. Patrick St., and the registration fee includes beer at each location, an event t-shirt, and registration gifts. Proceeds go directly to a small, local non-profit that has yet to be chosen. Stompers will be available to teach its signature dance moves, so crawlers can dance with the squad. The crawl launches at 4 p.m. and ends at the Bayou Beer Garden, stopping at Finn McCool’s, the Red Door and other Mid-City spots along the way.
“We felt that Mid-City deserved some loving this year, considering Endymion was moved,” says Lenaz. “It’s nice to support Mid-City and give back to them.”
Lenaz emphasizes the service nature of being a Stomper.
“People give lots of compliments and love our dancing, so being a Stomper is a little bit like being a rockstar,” he says. “But the point of the group is to give back through dancing. People smile and laugh when they see us dance.”
