The Fifth Annual Crawfish Mambo will host this year’s Crawfish Eating World Championship when it takes over The Cove at UNO’s Lakefront Campus on Saturday, May 9. The event will also feature performances by Rockin’ Dopsie & The Zydeco Swingers, Bucktown All Stars, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and the New Breed Brass Band.
This year will mark the first time that the Crawfish Eating World championship has taken place at its new home, as past editions have been tied to the annual French Quarter Festival. The Major League Eating-sanctioned title will be awarded to the person that consumes the most crawfish in a 10 minute span.
However, gluttony isn’t the only trait that can earn you an award at the Crawfish Mambo. Cooking skills will also be honored at the festival’s crawfish cook-off, which will pit 50 four-member boil teams against each other. A panel of “celebrity” judges will then pick the day’s winner, while attendees will select their own crowd favorite. (Team registration information can be found here).
Tickets for the Crawfish Mambo are currently on sale for $20, and entry includes all-you-can-eat crawfish for the day. Proceeds for the fest will support the University of New Orleans.
