Everybody in New Orleans knows the Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day block party at Tracey’s and Parasol’s, and the Downtown Irish Parade is almost equally as famous. But after you’ve had your fill of green beer at those two events you’ll want to keep the party going. The following are some highlights of music on St. Patrick’s Day in New Orleans:
The Kerry Irish Pub will be celebrating with music all day long. The day starts at 11 a.m. with Kenny Klein and Friends, with Speed the Mule following at 2 p.m. and Rites of Passage highlighting the party at 7:30 p.m.
Early in the evening, Ogden After Hours at the Ogden Museum features Alex McMurray, who will play music appropriate for the occasion: “traditional Irish music coupled with…songs about heartbreak, drinking, and The Church.” The concert is from 6 to 8 p.m.
At 10 p.m., Checkpoint Charlie’s annual St. Patty’s Day party kicks off with the Happy Talk Band. R. Scully & the Rough Seven follow at midnight once everyone’s had a few pints of Guinness; Alex McMurray says the band tried to steal the ATM last year.
Maison has a “Drunken Leprechaun Dance Party” upstairs starting at 9:30 p.m. The show features guitarist Alex Pena and his band the Tall Boys.
Finally, for more dancing Tipitina’s has a lineup of indie bands for $7, $5 if you’re wearing green. Jean-Eric, Big History, Super Nice Bros accompany the “cheap ass drink specials”.
