The City of New Orleans has announced that the Mayor’s Office will host the “Public Safety Summit: Building Connections for a Safer New Orleans” on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University Medical Center, located at 2000 Canal St. This free summit is open to the public and aims to bring together public safety professionals and community members to collaboratively address violence reduction in New Orleans.
“The theme of this year’s summit is ‘Building Connections for a Safer New Orleans’ because we know that making our city safer must be a collective effort,” said Criminal Justice Commissioner Tenisha Stevens. “Our goal is for attendees to leave with a greater understanding of ongoing violence reduction efforts and to have had the opportunity to collaboratively build solutions to make our city safer for all.”
Mayor LaToya Cantrell will be joined by Office of Criminal Justice Coordination Commissioner Tenisha Stevens, Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, and other city and public safety officials, along with faith, community and youth leaders. The participation of public safety professionals across multiple local, state and federal agencies, alongside city officials and community members, underscores the strong collaborative effort needed to enhance safety in New Orleans.
The summit is hosted by the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice Coordination, with partners including Total Community Action, the New Orleans Health Department, the New Orleans Police Department, Ubuntu Village, University Medical Center, Vera Institute of Justice, Dillard University Center for Racial Justice, Tulane University Violence Prevention Institute and United Way of Southeast Louisiana. The event is supported by the Safety and Justice Challenge, an initiative by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which invests in locally developed, equity-based solutions to make communities healthier, fairer, and safer.
The Public Safety Summit aims to build connections, strengthen partnerships, and leverage resources to collectively address violence in New Orleans. Panel topics will cover ongoing strategies to reduce violence by law enforcement, advancing equitable justice, and addressing the root causes of violence. Additionally, the summit will feature a display of resources for building stronger, more resilient communities.
Members of the public are encouraged to register to attend the summit here.
