In the video for electro-boogie duo Chromeo’s newest single, “When the Night Falls”, their synth riffs and drum machine beats hold so much funk they have the power to impregnate women upon sight. New Orleans might soon see a spike in its pregnancy rate, with Chromeo playing House of Blues this Sunday, September 18, with blue-eyed soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne & the County opening. It might seem like an unlikely pairing at first, but both Hawthorne and Chromeo mine old-school records—mid-late ’60s Detroit soul and early ’80s modern soul and boogie, respectively—for ideas and sounds that forge songs with a retro-but-fresh feel.
