Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter, composer, and producer Christian Scott (also known as Christian aTunde Adjuah) will play two intimate midnight shows at Preservation Hall this weekend (Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th).
Scott is a native New Orleanian, NOCCA graduate, and nephew of saxophone icon Donald Harrison, Jr.
As Geraldine Wyckoff explained in a 2014 OffBeat article, the young trumpeter left the city in his teens “to experience the world and broaden his education and career.” Based primarily in New York, he received numerous critical accolades (including two Edison Awards) before returning to his hometown twelve years later to share his expertise with the next generation of New Orleans musicians.
“I wanted to make sure that I was back for these younger guys and gals—just to let them know they can go in any direction,” Scott told Wyckoff in 2014. “I realized it was important for me to have a presence here.”
Scott’s particular brand of jazz incorporates diverse influences, notably the music of the Mardi Gras Indian culture in which he was raised.
Tickets are limited. Purchase tickets for Friday here and for Saturday here.
Net proceeds from Scott’s midnight residency will support the Preservation Hall Foundation’s education, outreach, archive, and legacy programming, which has a particular focus on serving the city’s underprivileged youth.
