Christian McBride Named Honorary King of Krewe of King James

Acclaimed jazz bassist Christian McBride will serve as Honorary King of the Krewe of King James: Super Bad Sex Machine Strollers, a marching krewe founded by DJ Soul Sister. The krewe will march as part of the KreweDelusion Parade in the French Quarter and Marigny on Saturday, February 11 (right after Krewe du Vieux).

12552757_799237656872134_1556820841909089955_nMcBride is a five-time Grammy-winning bassist, bandleader and composer who was recently appointed artistic director of the iconic Newport Jazz Festival. He performed with James Brown and has been an ambassador for the Godfather of Soul’s music for much of his life, even presenting his hero at the Hollywood Bowl in 2006 during big band concert of Brown’s 1970 album Soul on Top. In addition to marching in the parade, McBride will also play a show at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center on Friday, February 10.

The Krewe of King James was launched by Soul Sister in 2014. Led by the DJ and co-captain Pamela Blackmon of Funk Baby New Orleans, the krewe was modeled of other marching krewes like the Pussyfooters and Camel Toe Lady Steppers. However, unlike those groups, the Krewe of King James utilizes freestyle dances more often than choreographed routines. Membership is also open to both women and men.
