Music will again be in the spotlight at Christ Episcopal Church, Covington, from Friday, June 10, through Sunday, June 12, with the presentation of the seventh annual Jazz in June festival.
Established six years ago by former rector Rev. Bill Miller, Jazz in June offers three days of outstanding music to the community at-large, including ticketed evening performances on Friday and Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. and a special jazz Mass on Sunday at 10 a.m. Food trucks and a hospitality tent will provide a true Louisiana festival experience.
Tickets for the evening performances are on sale now online at JazzinJuneFest.org or at the church administration building, located at 120 S. Jahncke Avenue near downtown Covington. The cost for the evening concerts is $40 in advance and $50 at the door. There is no charge for the Sunday Mass and summer picnic that follows.
The weekend of entertainment is made possible by the generous support of individual and corporate sponsors, led by “King of Swing” McMath Construction and a grant from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Foundation, Inc.
Award-winning artist Nellie McKay and the Baton Rouge-based band Minos the Saint will kick off Jazz in June 2022 with their Friday evening performances. Singer-songwriter McKay blends multiple genres, including vintage jazz, vocal pop, and hip hop to create her signature eclectic sound. Her songs are undeniably catchy yet maintain a sharp social conscience. Minos the Saint is not what you would call a “traditional” southern Louisiana band. The ensemble plays mostly original music, with a variety of influences which yield experimental-yet-accessible original folk rock, uniquely representing Louisiana and the world.
Saturday night’s triple bill includes Abita Springs’ own Cactus Thief, and returning Jazz in June performers Handmade Moments, along with Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. Cactus Thief formed in 2016 around the songs of bandleader Aaron Maras. The band mixes rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, country and traditional Cajun music to create folk music with a modern sound. New Orleans-based band Handmade Moments features the delightful, multi-instrumentalists duo of Anna Moss and Joel Ludford. Rock, jazz, folk and southern roots all come together in a big pot of musical stew that is their latest record, Paw Paw Tree. Grammy winner Jon Cleary has released numerous albums over the years and has played with some of the city’s most legendary R&B performers, including Earl “TrickBag” King and Snooks Eaglin. Cleary and his band, The Absolute Monster Gentlemen, will bring their unique brand of funk and R&B music to Jazz in June. The Sunday music Masses, Shower the People, will feature the music of singer/songwriters of the ’70s, including songs from James Taylor, Paul Simon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and many more.
The intent of Jazz in June is to bring top-quality music to North Shore audiences, and this year’s performances fulfill that goal.
