The Bayou Boogaloo is set to take over Mid City this weekend, but Chickie Wah Wah plans to keep the party going after the fest wraps up each day. The venue–located on the other side of the neighborhood–will host Boogaloo Nights, a series of after shows that kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday.
This evening’s pre-Boogaloo festivities will get started at 8:30pm with a solo set from experimental cellist Hellen Gillet. Mike Dollon and his band will follow with a 10pm performance.
Friday will feature a show from Erica Falls, who will take the stage with her Donald Ramsey-led backing band at 9pm.
Vocalist Margie Perez will present the first installment of her “Margie Does Madonna” series at 10pm, with string-driven acoustic jazz ensemble Nyce opening the night at 8pm. Perez will be joined by a stellar cast of musicians for her set, including Cole Williams, Khris Royal, Eric “Benny” Bloom, Eric Bolivar, Sam Dickey and Kristina Morales.
Finally, the series will wrap up with a Sunday night performance from Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns, who will get started at 8pm.
Tickets for the shows will be available at the door.
As previously reported, this year’s Bayou Boogaloo will take place May 20-22 along the banks of Bayou St. John. Performers include The Wailers, Irma Thomas, Lowrider Band, Anders Osborne, George Porter Jr & The Runnin’ Pardners, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Nolatet, Motel Radio, Soul Rebels, Rory Danger & The Danger Dangers and many more.
