Chewbacchus celebrates twelfth season, January 28

The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus celebrates its twelfth season as it parades along the streets of the Bywater, Faubourg Marigny and French Quarter on Saturday, January 28. The theme this year is “Let the Wookiee Win” referencing a direct quote wherein C-3PO, based on the advice of Han Solo, suggests that R2-D2 let Chewbacca win the game they are playing.

With over one hundred sub-krewes spanning fandoms from Star Wars to Pokémon, the parade includes many niche and nerdy interests. Handmade throws, the most prestigious of which are the bandoliers and bando blocks (the ammunition strap and ammo worn by Chewbacca), are handed out by members along the route. Other throws include magnets, jewelry, figurines and more.

Chewbacchus’ route is slightly altered this year returning to the edge of the Bywater. The new route begins at Franklin and St. Claude Avenues before proceeding down St. Claude (riverside), turning left on Elysian Fields, right on Decatur, and then continuing along Decatur until it turns into N. Peters. The parade ends at N. Peters and Conti.

The Chewbacchanal, immediately following the parade, will open its doors at 9 p.m. in the Fillmore New Orleans. It will be open to the public and general admission tickets are $20. There will also be a limited-space VIP option for an additional $60 that includes a private room with complimentary specialty drinks and food, along with VIP-only tables and chairs in the main room.

Live music will be provided by the Golden Dawn Arkestra and People Museum along with various DJs throughout the night. The Chewbacchanal will end at 1 a.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
