Preservation Hall has just announced two events celebrating the 91st birthday of legendary saxophonist, clarinetist, and fourth generation New Orleans jazz musician and Lifetime Achievement recipient of a Best of The Beat Award in Music, Charlie Gabriel. Kermit’s Mother-In-Law Lounge will first host a free birthday celebration for Charlie on July 9, followed a few days later by the Charlie Gras concert at Toulouse Theatre on June 11, Charlie’s actual birth date.
The birthday celebration, free and open to the public, is at Kermit’s Treme Mother-In-Law Lounge on Sunday, July 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. Guests attending the event can look forward to Kermit’s renowned cooking. Preservation Brass will perform.
Preservation Hall has also organized a “Charlie Gras” concert at the Toulouse Theatre. This event aims to raise funds for the Preservation Hall Foundation. Scheduled for Tuesday, July 11—which coincides with Mr. Gabriel’s 91st birthday—the concert will kick off with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the show starting promptly at 7 p.m.
The Charlie Gras concert aims to be a star-studded affair, featuring performances by the Preservation Hall All-Stars, as well as appearances by notable guest musicians. The highlight of the evening will undoubtedly be the participation of the man of honor himself, Mr. Gabriel.
Both of the events at Kermit’s Treme Mother-In-Law Lounge and the concert at Toulouse Theatre aim to honor and pay tribute to the incredible contributions Charlie Gabriel has made to the world of music throughout his career. These events offer music enthusiasts and fans an opportunity to come together, celebrate, and express their appreciation for this living legend.
