Ragtime is not traditionally associated with New Orleans, but the genre that ultimately gave birth to jazz at the turn of the 20th century holds obvious importance to this city. Starting Thursday, April 5 and running throughout the weekend until Monday, April 9, the third annual New Orleans Ragtime Festival will honor the proto-jazzers of the past at several venues across the city.
This year’s festival will begin with a series of orchestral ragtime performances. On Thursday, April 5, Orange Kellin’s New Orleans Deluxe Orchestra will play at The Marigny Opera House (725 St. Ferdinand St.), 6-9 p.m. The New John Robichaux Society Orchestra will continue the festivities with a set at Scandia House (1772 Prytania St.) on Friday, April 6, 6-8 p.m. And The New Leviathan Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra will perform the final big band set at Rock ‘n’ Bowl (3016 S. Carrollton Ave.) on Saturday, April 7, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Sunday, April 8th will be a full-day affair at the Old New Orleans Jazz Museum inside the Old U.S. Mint (401 Barracks St.). The action will kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 4 p.m., with Richard Scott, Seva Venet’s Storyville Stringband, Mark Broad and Lil Fawley, Steve Pistorius and the Southern Syncopators, and one more surprise act filling out the bill.
The festival’s finale will take place at Southport Hall (200 Monticello Ave) on Monday, April 9, 7-10 p.m. with Lars Enegran’s New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra closing out a weekend of old school entertainment.
