As the Florida Keys begin the process of rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Irma’s devastation, New Orleans is stepping forward to aid in the relief effort. On the heels of citywide concerts and fundraisers for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, local businesses are organizing drives to collect items for those in need including Buffa’s Bar & Restaurant.
Cards for the Keys: Holiday Cheer From New Orleans to the Florida Keys is a multi-tiered endeavor. Every Wednesday from October 4 until November 29 from 6-8p.m., during Buffa’s Back Room Open Mic, people are invited to come and create holiday cards, or bring pre-made or store bought cards. Organizers are asking folks to bring Christmas and other holiday cards in addition to construction paper, envelopes, glitter, glue, markers, pens, crayons, and words of encouragement. These cards will be collected and placed into gift bags also including contributions of cash or gift cards before being sent to families in the Keys. Collection boxes for cash and gift cards will be available every evening at Buffa’s, and may soon be available in venues elsewhere.
Collections will make their way to Key West and onward on December 22. Those looking for other ways to donate can do so by sending donations via PayPal to [email protected].
