Is Cafe Du Monde the most Instagrammed restaurant in the United States?
It’s certainly the most Instagrammed location in Louisiana, according to data compiled by Time. The publication recently posted a map of the U.S. that includes a breakdown of the most Instagrammed places in each state, restaurant or otherwise. In a move that will surprise few people, the iconic French Quarter establishment–which specializes in chicory coffee and, of course, beignets–easily holds the top spot for Louisiana.
In case you were wondering, the data is based on the number of times a location is “geotagged” on the social media platform. This does appear to happen pretty regularly at Cafe du Monde.
However, Food & Wine Magazine takes Cafe du Monde’s supremacy one step further, declaring it the most Instagrammed restaurant in the entire country.
The culinary publication posted its list of the social network’s most popular American eateries yesterday, with Cafe du Monde sitting right at the top. Food & Wine notes that, while many of the restaurants on its list predate smartphones, Cafe du Monde actually predates telephones of any kind (the original Cafe du Monde first opened in 1862, while Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone until 1876).
There’s no telling how long Cafe du Monde’s reign at the top of the Instagram charts will last but, after 153 years, few doubt the restaurant’s staying power. No matter what happens one thing will always be true–beignets are meant to be eaten, not photographed.
