On Sunday, March 10, Tipitina’s will host Bruce Daigrepont and his Cajun band for a Fais Do-Do dance party celebrating the beloved genre of Louisiana music.
This weekend’s event is part of an ongoing series hosted by the historic venue and performed by Daigrepont, who first put together a fais do-do together in 1986. The child of post-Word War II Cajun immigrants who came to New Orleans from rural farming communities of Avoyelles Parish, Daigrepont has been performing traditional Cajun music since childhood, picking up the guitar and banjo before the age of ten. Eventually, he learned to play the French accordion and, in 1980, founded his own Cajun band.
Honing his skills at weekly fais do-d0 dances at the Maple Leaf Bar, Daigrepont is lauded for “almost single-handedly” popularizing Cajun music and dancing in New Orleans. His live performances are applauded for adherence to the inclusion of Cajun sound-accordion and fiddle, but also the addition of “an aggressive rhythm section” with bass, drums and the occasional rubboard or triangle.
