On October 1, the Broad Theater, the independent film locale of New Orleans, tweeted a cryptic (or not so) message about the possible opening of an “outdoor space” this month. Other indie theaters in the United States, such as the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta and Alamo Drafthouse in Austin have made necessary adjustments to keep up with COVID-related restrictions. Alamo Drafthouse has kept up normal operations with special sanitary guidelines while Plaza has forged ahead with outdoor drive-in movie experiences. OffBeat confirmed with Brian Knighten, owner of Broad Theater, that yes, indeed — the outdoor drive in movie space would open its outdoor space Wednesday, October 7.
Knighten tells OffBeat, “We are opening a new outdoor theater this week! We are hosting the Vice Presidential debate on Wednesday then planning to play Down by Law [directed by Jim Jarmusch, filmed in New Orleans] from Thursday to Sunday, but with this potential hurricane coming, we are not sure of the rest of the weekend.”
Mike Coussan and Rurik Nunan played before the Vice Presidential Debates which kicked off the start of the outdoor cinema experience.
The theater has continued to plug new releases such as Possessor, directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of David. The theater’s Facebook page also continues to promote ticket sales for Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold The Concert on sale now at TheBroadTheater.com for both October 21 and 25.
