Pop music innovator Brian Wilson is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Beach Boys’ groundbreaking 1966 album Pet Sounds with an extensive North American tour. That outing will make its way to New Orleans on March 29 when Wilson headlines the Saenger Theatre with former Beach Boys Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin.
Widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time, Pet Sounds was a departure from the Beach Boys early pop rock sound. The album, which was essentially written, arranged, composed and produced by Wilson, was a more mature offering than the band’s previous efforts. While its introspective lyrics introduced many listeners to their first concept album, Pet Sounds‘ biggest leap forward came in the realm of music production. The LP’s innovative use of harmony, timbre and reverb, combined with its synthesis of disparate musical styles, reshaped the way musicians approached pop music and (along with The Beatles’ Revolver) brought psychedelia to the masses.
Wilson’s upcoming show will see him perform Pet Sounds in its entirety, along with a variety of greatest hits and rare cuts from the Beach Boys catalog. The tour current tour marks the final time that Wilson, who is now 74, intends to play the album in full. (We spoke with Wilson ahead of his Jazz Fest set back in 2005, check out the interview here).
Tickets for the concert will go on sale this Friday, September 30 at noon.
