A pair of local New Orleans artists have put together a limited-time “Bowie Gras” art exhibit that incorporates the flare of Carnival season as well as Bowie’s infamous style. The show, which features three distinct photo series inspired by Mardi Gras and the recently departed English rocker, debuted this past Saturday at New Orleans’ Bywater Art Lofts Gallery.
Josh Hailey and Brittany Schall, the creative co-collaborators behind the project, enlisted a diverse array of volunteer models to cover their otherwise naked bodies in glitter, rhinestones and light for the various photo series. The results capture the ways in which the Mardi Gras spirit and David Bowie’s artistic legacy overlap. For instance, one piece shows what it may have looked like if the Starman had designed Mardi Gras Indian suits on flesh instead of fabric.
The free showcase features the aforementioned vibrant imagery, along with music, complementary snacks and the opportunity to have your own face glittered up Bowie-style.
Bowie Showcase runs from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. everyday through Saturday, February 27 at the Bywater Art Lofts Gallery at 3725 Dauphine Street.
