Bobby Rush brings New Orleans energy to new song, “Recipe for Love” (Premiere)

Bobby Rush, who is now 86 years old, is a native of Homer, LA and an urban blues artist from the genre’s first generation. In anticipation of his upcoming album, Rush is premiering a single about love, titled “Recipe for Love.”

“If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it,” said Rush, speaking about the message behind his new blues track. “When you’re with a woman, whatever she did to get you and whatever she’s doing that you like, she doesn’t have to do anything new. Keep cookin’ what you’re cookin’. Whatever you did this morning, do it at lunchtime, suppertime, and at night. If you’re doing what I like, don’t change it. I’m talking physical stuff but I’m putting it in cake form. A piece of your pie, some of your cake…I’m talking about some of your kisses.”

Rush won his first Grammy in 2017 for the Scott Billington produced LP, Porcupine Meat, which won the Best Traditional Blues Album category. Porcupine Meat also won Best Blues Album at the 2017 Best of the Beat Music Awards. More recently, Rush has been nominated for the 2019 Blues Music Awards for the B.B. King Entertainer award.

“New Orleans had everything to do with my whole life and approach,” Rush said about Louisiana’s influence on his music. “Everything about me is the bayou, that’s the truth. New Orleans always had this energy. It wasn’t like the Delta Blues where it’s like ‘oh baby, you don’t have to go.’ It had this energy, rhythm and action to it. I think of Louis Jordan and his swiftness. When I got to Chicago, I tried to take that with me. Although I was doing things like Muddy Waters, I still took the energy with me from Louisiana.”

“Recipe for Love” will be available on streaming platforms on Aug. 2. Rush’s new album, Sitting On Top of the Blues, will be released via Thirty Tigers on Aug. 16.
