Jon Cleary and Bobby Rush will headline separate shows at the Carver Theater in New Orleans this March.
Cleary, who picked up his first Grammy Award last year, will be backed by his trio when he performs at the venue on Saturday, March 18. The group features bassist Cornell Williams, drummer A.J. Hall and guitarist Derwin “Big D” Perkins. Mardi Gras Indian-infused fuk act Cha Wa will open the night. Tickets for the show are available now.
Blues master Bobby Rush will take over the venue the following week on Friday, March 24. The guitarist and singer has found himself back in the spotlight in recent months due to the strength of his 2016 album, Porcupine Meat. He last performed in New Orleans in January when he joined The Fortifiers at Generations Hall for the Best of the Beat Music Awards. Fellow bluesman Walter “Wolfman” Washington will open the night. Tickets are available here.
Both Cleary and Rush picked up awards at the 2016 Best of the Beat Awards. Cleary was named Best Keyboardist, while Rush’s Porcupine Meat was named the Best Blues Album.
As noted in our latest issue, the Carver Theater recently underwent an $8 million renovation that has added state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment, as well as cosmetic/functional/safety improvements like multiple viewing screens, an in-house box office and remodeled artist green room. The venue has announced a variety of programming for the next few months, including a few weekly series and a March show from the Honey Island Swamp Band.
