The late Bobby Charles wrote and recorded a number of classic songs starting with “See You Later Alligator” and “Walking to New Orleans,” but only one classic album – 1971’s Bobby Charles, recorded in Woodstock, New York for Bearsville Records with a talent roster that includes Dr. John, pedal steel player Ben Keith, guitarist Amos Garrett, saxophonist David Sanborn, as well as Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson of the Band.
Rhino Handmade will reissue the album as part of the three-disc, deluxe edition that will also include unreleased songs recorded during Charles’ time in Woodstock – many of which he’d later release in different forms – and a 30-minute interview with Charles conducted by Barry Hansen, who’d later be known as Dr. Demento. The album will be available August 16, and the first 500 orders will also receive a replica 7-inch of Charles’ first single from the album, “Small Town Talk” b/w “Save Me Jesus.” To order the album, go to Rhino.com.
