The countdown begins for the return of BLERDFEST!, the Gulf Coast’s first and only Black Nerd Festival, hitting New Orleans for its third consecutive year on May 18. The event promises to be bigger, better, and blacker—celebrating the worlds of anime, comix, cosplay, horror, sci-fi, tech, video games and more.
BLERDFEST!, which stands for Black Nerd Festival, is a unique celebration of representation, education, and inclusion. The festival aims to create an all-ages space for anyone interested in Black Nerd culture, showcasing anime, comix, cosplay, horror, sci-fi, tech, video games, among other elements.
The 2024 theme is “Myths and Legends,” promising attendees an immersive journey into fantastical realms. Activities lined up include celebrity guests, such as New Orleans’ own Wendell Pierce, panels, video gaming tournaments, table gaming tournaments, cosplay demos and contests, workshops (covering topics like cosplay, drawing, writing, tech, etc.), a kids’ corner, free arcade, vendors, live music and entertainment, food trucks and more.
Moreover, BLERDFEST! isn’t just about fun; it’s about giving back to the community. Ten percent of the proceeds from the event will benefit the New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter, and Women With A Vision.
The festival takes place Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School, located at 4000 Cadillac Street, NOLA 70112.
BLERDFEST! is produced by the NOLA-based True Blend, in partnership with various organizations including the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund (NOTCF), Foundation for Louisiana, InspireNOLA, Women of Wakanda, LLC, Camp Mythik, IGL Foundation, and Black Film Festival New Orleans. The organizers bring decades of experience in education, gaming, law, tech, visual & performing arts, and public art programming. Notably, Oscar-winning Hannah Beachler (Production Design, Black Panther, 2018) serves as Creative Consultant for the festival.
