In our 2004 OffBeat cover story by Christopher Blagg Sammie Williams recalled his beginnings:
The big kid who at first didn’t know the name of his instrument was now getting schooled by some of the city’s musical legends, but the brass bug didn’t hit him until he was 15. He’d been slowly getting into jazz, but like most of his peers, was still a major hip-hop and R&B disciple. All that changed when his mom got him a particular CD one Christmas. It was the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s Ears to the Wall, and it lit a fire under the curious teenager. He instantly fell in love with their modern, funky take on the brass band tradition. Immediately upon hearing it, Sammie knew he had found his calling. “I said to my mother, ‘Mom, I’m going to play with that band someday.’” Teenagers across the nation have probably uttered these same words since the dawn of pop music. No one ever really gets to play with their musical idols. It’s just something you say in a fit of adolescent passion. Right? It seems to be different with Big Sam. He’s not the most loquacious fellow in the world, but when he says something, it’s no idle chatter or pie in the sky dream. Big Sam Williams means what he says.
Founded in New Orleans in 1995, Stephen Klein Management has guided the careers of bands including Deadeye Dick, Cowboy Mouth, and Papa Grows Funk, all OffBeat cover subjects.
