If you’ve ever seen Big Freedia command a stage, proclaiming “I am the queen diva” with her booming voice and linebacker’s build, you might have spotted a reality TV show waiting to happen. That show will indeed be hitting Fuse-TV later this year. It was announced this week that Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce will premiere on the network on Wednesday, September 18.
So far they’ve offered only this description: The show will follow Freedia and fellow artists Mr. Ghetto, Sissy Nobby and others “as they struggle to take their music to the next level of success.” But given the personalities involved, we can only assume that the show will be livelier and more fun than the description suggests.
For those not in the know, Freedia is one of the brightest stars to emerge from the gay- and trans-friendly sissy bounce movement, thanks partly to the anthemic singles “Azz Everywhere” and “Gin in My System.” She was profiled earlier this year in a more straightforward documentary, Big Freedia: The Queen Diva, produced by the uber-hip folks at Pitchfork Media. Freedia was featured on OffBeat’s cover in July 2011.
You might even see OffBeat’s headquarters when the Fuse show comes around, since their camera crew in our office last month. They filmed a segment where Katey Red and Rusty Lazer asked us to promote their Schoolhouse Bounce event; we were of course glad to oblige. That’s all the details we have so far, but this looks so cool that we might even forgive Fuse for the other new show it’s just announced, the one starring the Insane Clown Posse.
